In a speech, Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn III admitted the files were lost to "foreign intruders."

Washington Post: Yesterday during a speech announcing the Pentagon's new cybersecurity policy, Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn II revealed that the Defense Department lost 24,000 files to "foreign intruders" in an incident in March. The files were taken from a defense contractor's systems. In addition, Lynn said hackers have stolen data relating to "our most sensitive systems, including aircraft avionics, surveillance technologies, satellite communications systems and network security protocols."

He added, "It is a significant concern that over the past decade, terabytes of data have been extracted by foreign intruders from corporate networks of defense companies."
