The update will find and remove Mac Defender and related programs.

USA Today: Despite the platform's reputation for security, Mac users have been plagued in recent weeks by a scareware scam. Confronted with false warnings about a virus on their systems, many users have downloaded fake anti-virus software called Mac Defender, MacProtector or MacSecurity and entered their credit card information to complete the purchase.

Now Apple says it will respond to the widespread problem with a new security update that will find the fake software and remove it. Until the update becomes available, users can avoid problems by force quitting their Web browsers if they see the fake virus notifications.
