Intel "Reinvents" Microprocessor with New 3D Design

New chips provide a 37 percent performance boost and reduce power consumption by 50 percent.

Windows IT Pro: Intel has announced the development of a revolutionary 3D chip design it calls "Finfet" (fin field-effect transistor). "Intel's scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "Amazing, world-shaping devices will be created from this capability as we advance Moore's Law into new realms."

According to the company, the new chips offer a 37 percent performance boost and reduce power consumption by 50 percent.
