Half of World's Smartphones Will Run Android by 2012, Says Gartner

The research firm predicts that worldwide smartphone sales will reach 468 million units this year.

ReadWriteWeb: Market research firm Gartner has released a new set of controversial predictions about the smartphone market. The company believes manufacturers will sell 468 million handsets this year, and that Android will be the most popular operating system. In fact, the company believes that Android will capture 49 percent of the market by the end of 2012.

Gartner believes that Apple's iOS will remain the number two platform through the end of 2012 and that Windows Phone will capture third place by 2013.
