Google Tests Fate in China as Mapping Application Deadline Looms

The ongoing confrontation between Google and the Chinese government may soon affect the company's mapping service.

BusinessWeek: The latest Google service to be impacted by the company's ongoing confrontation with the Chinese government may be its mapping service. Last May, China passed a law requiring all Internet mapping services to obtain a license in order to to "address illegal practices" and an "inadequate awareness of national security." The deadline for applying for the license is tomorrow, and Google has yet to apply.

The Chinese say they will take "administrative actions," including "resolute punishment for serious violations," if Google does not file the required application.
