Oracle Stops Developing Software for Intel's Itanium Chips

Microsoft and Red Hat had previously stopped making software that works on Itanium microprocessors.

Computerworld: "After multiple conversations with Intel senior management, Oracle has decided to discontinue all software development on the Intel Itanium microprocessor," Oracle announced Tuesday. "Intel management made it clear that their strategic focus is on their x86 microprocessor and that Itanium was nearing the end of its life."

With that announcement Oracle joined Microsoft and Red Hat who had previously announced that they would no longer support servers with Itanium processors.

Part of Oracle's motivation for dropping Itanium may be its ongoing clash with HP. HP is one of the largest manufacturers of Itanium-based servers.
