Google, VeriFone in Talks on Mobile-Payment Partnership

The deal could enable consumers to make payments with their cell phones.

Wall Street Journal: Unnamed sources are saying that Google and VeriFone are working on a deal to enable consumers to use their smartphones like credit cards. VeriFone makes terminals that allow merchants to accept credit cards, and as part of the deal, those terminals would gain the ability to use near field communication (NFC) technology embedded in phones.

Google reportedly hopes to test the mobile payment system later this year in cities including New York and Portland, OR.
