Computerworld: Analysts say an increasing number of enterprises are turning to Hadoop to help them manage their data. Hadoop is an open source project supported by the Apache Foundation that uses distributed file system technology to handle large amounts of data with multiple data types and sources. Its users include Facebook, EBay, Amazon, Baidu and Yahoo. And RedMonk analyst Stephen O'Grady notes that it's becoming more popular with banks, advertising companies, life science firms and pharmaceutical companies.
"The big picture is that with Hadoop you can have even a one and two person startup being able to process the same volume of data that some of the biggest companies in the world are," said O'Grady.
