Shortly after taking action against JCPenney, the search giant lowers Overstock in its rankings.

Wall Street Journal: Just two weeks ago, Google took action against retailer JCPenney because of its SEO practices. Now it has taken similar action against Overstock.com, dropping the company from the first position in many searches down to the fifth or sixth page of results.

The measures against Overstock came as a result of a program which encouraged colleges and universities to post a link to Overstock which gave users a 10 percent discount at the site. Having a link from a .edu site can boost a site's rankings significantly.
