The malware was aimed at five particular targets in Iran.

NY Times: Security software vendor Symantec has released a new report on the Stuxnet worm that spread through numerous industrial sites. According to the report, the malware was released in three separate waves and intended to hit five separate targets in Iran. It was possible to track the worm because, unlike most malware, it recorded data about each computer it infected.

The report also claims that three or four versions of the Stuxnet code were written. It was likely first distributed as an e-mail attachment or via a thumb drive.
