Retailer JCPenney gets caught gaming Google.

NYTimes: During the holiday shopping season, JCPenney's Web site suddenly shot to the top of the Google search rankings for terms like “skinny jeans,” “home decor,” “comforter sets,” “furniture” and dozens of others. The high rankings were the result of paid links on more than 2,105 sites.

“J. C. Penney did not authorize, and we were not involved with or aware of, the posting of the links that you sent to us, as it is against our natural search policies,” said company spokesperson Darcie Brossart. “We are working to have the links taken down.”

Google has taken "corrective action" against the retailer, manually dropping its search rankings.
