Smartphones Outsell PCs

IDC reports that manufacturers shipped 100.9 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2010, but only 92.1 million PCs.

ReadWriteWeb: According to researchers at IDC, smartphones outsold PCs for the first time ever in the fourth quarter of 2010. During the last three months of last year, manufacturers shipped 100.9 million smartphones worldwide, but only 92.1 million PCs. For phone makers, that was an 87.2 percent increase from the same quarter in 2009; for PC makers, it was a 5.5 percent increase.

The top five smartphone vendors during the period were, in order, Nokia, Apple, RIM, Samsung and HTC.
