How Apple and Google Will Kill the Password

Biometrics and smartphones with near-field communications could eliminate the need for logging in to sites and services.

Computerworld: "Imagine," Mike Elgan writes, "Sitting down at a public PC, surfing the Web, visiting Facebook, checking your online bank account and buying something on Amazon.com -- all without entering passwords or credit card information." That could be very possible in the near future thanks to biometrics and smartphones equipped with near field communications (NFC).

Recently, Apple has taken steps toward this reality by applying for a variety of patents for biometric and NFC patents, as well as hiring an NFC expert to head its Mobile Commerce department. In addition, Google has been working hard on biometric security solutions.
