The purchase gives Google digital rights management technology for protecting video copyrights.

Seattle Times: Google has announced that it is purchasing Seattle-based software vendor Widevine for an undisclosed sum. Widevine makes digital rights management software that is used in more than 250 million Web-connected devices, including GoogleTV and Android devices.

The announcement comes as Viacom resumes its copyright infringement lawsuit against Google-owned YouTube. Last week, Google pledged to do a better job of removing copyright offenders from its services.
