Google CEO Sees Android Phones Replacing Credit Cards

Android 2.3 will support near-field communication chips that will enable mobile payments.

InformationWeek: According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, the next update of Android will support near-field communication chips. Those chips would enable owners to use their Android smartphones to make mobile payments. "This could replace your credit card," Schmidt said.

Schmidt said that Android 2.3, codenamed "Gingerbread" will become available within a few weeks.
