Carrier revenues for mobile data hit $14 billion in the third quarter.

GigaOm: Despite new tiered pricing plans, U.S. smartphone users have continued to increase their mobile data consumption at a high rate. Analyst Chetan Sharma said that the wireless data market increased 25 percent year-over-year in the third quarter to reach $14 billion.

“By the end of 2010, we expect the average U.S. consumption to be approximately 325 MB/mo, up 112% from 2009,” Sharma predicts. According to his estimates, “the total US mobile data traffic will exceed 1 Exabyte for the first time by the end of 2010.” (One exabyte is the equivalent of a billion gigabytes.)
