Although it's being billed as a consumer product, analysts say Umi will have small business owners running out to Best Buy.

ZDNet: Yesterday, Cisco unveiled a new home telepresence solution dubbed "Umi" which allows users to make and receive video calls from their TVs. Although it's being billed as a consumer product, analysts say it may be an even bigger hit with cash-strapped small businesses. Here's why:

  • The Price--At $599 plus $25 per month, Umi is pretty expensive for the consumer market, but may look good to small businesses who don't want to buy costlier business-oriented devices.
  • The Bandwidth--In order to make Umi work, you need upload speeds of 1.5Mbps or 3.5Mbps for 720p and 1080p video quality, respectively. That's higher than most consumers have, but about right for businesses.
  • The User Base--Umi only makes sense for families if a lot of their friends and family members also have the device.
