New photo format could help speed up the Web.

eWeek: Google has unveiled a developer preview of WebP, a new photo format that, according to product manager Richard Rabbat, "promises to significantly reduce the byte size of photos on the Web, allowing Web sites to load faster than before."

In tests, the new format allowed researchers to reduce the size of photo files up to 39 percent. Because images make up 65 percent of the data transmitted by Web pages, reducing the size of those files could have a big impact on end users' experience.
