IBM to Acquire Data Specialist Netezza for $1.7B

The acquisition will help Big Blue expand its presence in the analytics and data warehousing market.

Wall Street Journal: IBM has announced that it will purchase analytics and data warehousing vendor Netezza Corp. for about $1.7 billion. According to IBM's Arvind Krishna, Netezza offers "a much simpler way to get started on analytics and data warehousing than anyone else in the industry." He added that Netezza technology can be run by a single staffer instead of "an army of people."

Some analysts are wondering whether IBM's offer will spark a bidding war, similar to the recent HP-Dell battle over 3Par.
