A new study says the number of adults over 50 using social networking sites has nearly doubled in the past year.

CNN: According to a newly released survey from the Pew Research Center, the number of adults over 50 using Facebook and Twitter rose from 22 percent in April 2009 to 42 percent in May 2010. The number of those 65 and older using the sites showed a 100 percent increase, while users between 50 and 64 jumped 88 percent. By contrast, the number of social networking users between 18 and 29 grew just 13 percent.

However, the report points out that most older adults still prefer to communicate with friends and family via e-mail rather than social networking sites.
