Malware installed on a flash drive resulted in “the most significant breach of U.S. military computers ever.”

NY Times: Deputy secretary of defense William J. Lynn 3d has confirmed that in 2008 a malware-infected flash drive was plugged into a military laptop, resulting in an incident he calls “the most significant breach of U.S. military computers ever.” In his words, that laptop became “a digital beachhead, from which data could be transferred to servers under foreign control," and the malware spread throughout military computers including those used by Central Command.

Lynn said that episode “marked a turning point in U.S. cyber-defense strategy.”
