80 percent of security administrators say social networking tools, widgets, instant messaging programs, and similar apps threaten network security.

InformationWeek: In a Ponemon Institute study commissioned by Check Point Software Technologies, 80 percent of security administrators say social networking tools, widgets, instant messaging programs, and other Web 2.0 technologies undermine enterprise security. In addition, 20 percent of those surveyed say employees rarely or never consider the security threats from downloading applications from the Internet, streaming video, or using peer-to-peer file-sharing sites.

The report also found that "while this is an issue that must be addressed through strategic investment in technology and awareness, our research also shows that most IT administrators do not believe their organizations have sufficient resources dedicated to securing critical web applications."
