New hardware will allow customers to run their own Azure-based cloud for internal purposes or as a service to their customers.

Computerworld: Microsoft has announced a new Azure appliance which should make it easier for enterprises to run private or hybrid clouds. "What we are talking about is a specific locked-down piece of hardware that can represent hundreds of thousands of servers," explained Microsoft's Amy Barzdukas. "Like an appliance, it is standardized and turn-key, so customers can deploy the Windows Azure in their data centers."

The appliance will be targeted at large enterprises that would consider buying 1,000 servers at a time and will be sold by Dell, Fujitsu and Hewlett-Packard.
