The move will allow EMC to offer integrated data warehousing appliances.

InformationWeek: EMC has announced that it has purchased data warehousing software provider Greenplum. "This puts EMC on a new footing in the data warehousing market, making them a full-stack vendor of appliances with their own hardware and integrated software," said Forrester analyst James Kobielus.

Other industry watchers noted that the move should be good for Greenplum as well, because being part of a larger company gives potential customers the assurance that Greenplum won't go out of business.

The deal is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year.
