The latest U.S. plan would auction off an additional 500 MHz of spectrum to mobile carriers, doubling the amount available for wireless devices.

Reuters: Today President Obama will sign a memorandum directing government agencies to auction off 500 MHz worth of federal and commercial spectrum over the next 10 years. The move would roughly double the amount of spectrum available for wireless devices, helping to meet the expected surge in demand.

White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers explained the reason behind the new policy saying, "This initiative will catalyze private sector investment, contribute to economic growth, and help to create hundreds of thousands of jobs."
