The first weekend sales of the latest iPhone breaks the previous record of 1 million units sold.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek: Last Thursday, the Apple iPhone 4 went on sale in the U.S., U.K., Japan, France and Germany. Now the sales numbers for the first weekend are in, and Apple says it sold 1.7 million units. That breaks the previous record of 1 million units sold in the first weekend that was set by the iPhone 3GS.

Some analysts note that Apple had difficulty getting enough screens for its devices, so the actual demand for the device may have been much higher.
