Computerworld: VMware President and CEO Paul Maritz sees a major change in the data center. Virtualization and open source frameworks are taking over the duties of operating systems. Traditionally, OSes coordinated underlying hardware resources and provided abstract services to applications. But in the new data center, virtualization takes over the hardware coordination role, and open source frameworks like Ruby on Rails are taking over the abstract services.
Maritz also predicts that cloud computing will become like today's x86 hardware platform, with the complexity hidden from users.
