The market research firm believes that the number of people making payments from mobile devices will increase 54.5 percent this year.

Digitimes: According to market research firm Gartner, the worldwide number of people making payments from their mobile phones and other devices will grow 54.5 percent this year, to exceed 108.6 million users. That's about 2.1 percent of all mobile users.

So far, growth in mobile payments has been centered in developing markets in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Researchers say that phenomenon is due to the fact that developed markets already have a lot of payment options, but the developing world is under-served by the financial industry.
