A release included in Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday distribution is resulting in error messages for Sharepoint Server systems administrators.

Sharepoint Briefing: A review of posts on Microsoft's TechNet Forums reveals that the latest SharePoint Server 3.0 security patch may have resulted in additional headaches for systems administrators. Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-039, which was included in the latest Patch Tuesday release, has resulted in error messages which read, "Unable to connect to the configuration database," and a system freeze.

"None of the suggested fixes worked. I uninstalled and re-installed WSS [Windows SharePoint Server] 3.0, and we could get to our SP [SharePoint] site again. But of course... [the patch] was installed again last night, and now the site is broken, again!!!" complained one user.

Microsoft says it "is investigating new public claims of a possible installation issue involving MS10-039, a bulletin issued in the June update" and "will make further guidance available if necessary once our investigation is complete."
