The FBI has contacted Gawker Media about its report on an AT&T security breach that revealed the e-mail addresses of thousands of iPad users.

Wall Street Journal: The FBI has reportedly opened an investigation into the AT&T security breach that revealed the e-mail addresses of 114,000 iPad users, including many high-ranking government officials. Gawker Media, which originally broke the story, has said, "We can confirm that Gawker Media was contacted by the FBI earlier today and issued a formal preservation notice."

Escher Auernheimer, a member of the group that tipped off Gawker Media to the flaw, said that they have not been contacted by law enforcement and didn't do anything illegal. Security experts say that it's unclear whether the group broke the law.
