Cisco Powers Up Router, Switches For Smart Grids

The networking giant is unveiling a new lineup of products that will allow utilities to create IP-based infrastructures for power delivery, monitoring and control.

NetworkWorld: This week, Cisco is rolling out new switches and routers that could power "smart grids," IP-based infrastructure for power delivery, monitoring and control. The two products--the Connected Grid Router 2010 (CGR 2010) and Connected Grid Switch 2520 (CGR 2520--will be available later this summer.

According to the company, smart grid technology could reduce global carbon emissions by 12 percent, and the market for smart grid products could be worth $20 billion per year for the next five years.
