I.B.M. Buys Business Software Unit From AT&T

Big Blue will pay $1.4 billion for Sterling Commerce.

NY Times: In the company's biggest acquisition since it purchased Cognos, IBM has announced that it will pay $1.4 billion for AT&T's Sterling Commerce unit. Sterling offers "collaboration networks" that make it easy for its 18,000 subscribers worldwide to close deals with vendors.

In 2000, AT&T (then known as SBC Communications) paid $3.9 billion for Sterling.
