But how do you fit them in a data center?

NetworkWorld: Researchers at HP Labs have presented a new report on a clean energy source that's, well, not so clean. They say that the manure from a 10,000-cow farm produces enough energy to power a 1 MW enterprise data center--or about 1,000 servers.

While the theory looks good on paper and has generated a lot of serious interest, the researchers admit that the idea isn't quite ready to put into practice. "I've not yet submitted a purchase order for cows," said HP researcher Tom Christian.

Others point out that most dairy farms have far fewer than 10,000 cows. And NetworkWorld notes, "There are some practical problems, not the least of which is connecting a data center to the cows."
