IT Departments Losing Ground On Cloud Computing

A new study shows that IT departments don't know what cloud apps their enterprises are using, and they're not convinced their companies are being vigilant enough before deploying cloud services.

InformationWeek: A new report from the Ponemon Institute and CA shows that IT departments don't feel that they have a handle on their companies' cloud computing. Only 36 percent of US survey respondents (55 percent of those in Europe) believe that their enterprises are vigilant in conducting audits or assessments of cloud computing resources before deployment. And only 55 percent of US respondents and 44 percent of European respondents believe they know all the cloud-based applications, infrastructure and platforms in use at their enterprises.

The report concludes, "IT practitioners in both the US and Europe admit they do not have complete knowledge of all the cloud computing resources deployed within their organizations today. This occurs because cloud computing deployment decisions are often made by end-users without conducting a thorough review for security."
