Four NYU students have raised $23,676 (more than double their goal) to create an open source alternative to Facebook.

NY Times: Four NYU students--Dan Grippi, Raphael Sofaer, Max Salzberg and Ilya Zhitomirskiy--announced a plan on April 24 to launch an open source alternative to Facebook that would protect users' privacy. They hoped to raise $10,000 in 12 days. As of yesterday, they had raised $23,676 from 739 backers.

The project, called Diaspora, already has more than 2,000 Twitter followers. “So many people think it needs to exist,” Salzberg said. “We’re making it because we want to use it.”
