Forensic Tool Will Advance Data Recovery

Research may allow businesses to recover more data from text files that have been corrupted.

NetworkWorld: Nasir Memon, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, says he has discovered a technique that could help businesses recover more text files from corrupted hard drives. He has taken a technique called "SmartCarving" that is currently used to recover image files and applied it to text files. The research is promising, because SmartCarving recovers 10 to 15 percent of image files that can't be recovered with traditional forensic tools.
