Despite the growth in solid state drives, IDC expects manufacturers to ship 300,000 petabytes of hard disk storage in the next four years.

TechWorld: Market research firm IDC has released a new report predicting that hard disk drive manufacturers will ship 300,000 petabytes of storage in the next four years. Hard drives purchased for enterprise applications will grow from 40.5 million in 2009 to 52.6 million in 2014. To put the increase in perspective, IDC says that more hard drive capacity will ship in the next two years than in the past 20 years combined.

IDC also expects that the price per gigabyte of storage will continue to decline by 25 to 30 percent per year.
