Sony to End Floppy Disk Production

It's the end of an era--the leading supplier of floppy disks will cease production next year.

PCWorld: You may have thought that companies stopped producing floppy disks years ago, but Japanese consumers actually bought 12 million of the aging storage devices last year. Now Sony, which has 70 percent of the Japanese market, has announced that it will stop making floppies in 2011.

PCWorld writes, "To put the floppy market in perspective, consider those 12 million disks sold in Japan last year. Together they can hold about 17GB of data, which isn't even enough to fill a single-sided Blu-ray Disc."
