Legal Spying Via The Cell Phone System

Two researchers have published a method for finding people's cell phone numbers, tracking their whereabouts, and listening to their voice mail--and they say it's all legal.

cnet: Researchers Nick DePetrillo and Don Bailey will explain to the audience at today's Source Boston security conference how they can exploit weaknesses in the telecom system to spy on almost anyone they wish--legally. Using available software and databases, the two say they can find a person's phone number, find out where the person is located at a particular time, and listen to a person's voice mail.

When asked what people can do to protect their privacy, Bailey said, "people are just going to have to be made aware of the threat."
