Sources say that the Google hackers stole information about the company's top secret Gaia password system.

NY Times: In January, Google revealed that Chinese hackers had infiltrated its systems and stolen some data--but they didn't say what. Now, sources tell the NY Times that one of the items stolen was information about the company's top secret Gaia password system. It controls access for millions of people who use Gmail and Google's other Web apps.

The sources also revealed that the attack began when a Google employee in China clicked on a link in an instant message that connected to a malware-infected site.
