Library of Congress Will Save Tweets

Venerable institution considers Ashton Kutcher’s tweets--and everyone else's-- part of “the universal body of human knowledge.”

NY Times: The Library of Congress has announced that it will begin archiving public tweets. The daily barrage of 55 million messages will be saved as part of the “Web capture” project, which has already collected 167 terabytes of data during the past decade.

Historians and academic researchers see great potential for insight into the lives of average citizens, instead of the elites who are usually chronicled by history texts. “This is an entirely new addition to the historical record, the second-by-second history of ordinary people,” said Yale Law School associate librarian Fred R. Shapiro.
