Researchers at the University of Washington say their Prefab tool lets users take their favorite features from one program and use them in another program.

CIO.com: James Fogarty and his fellow researchers at the University of Washington have a new tool that could let you control iTunes from inside Microsoft Word. Called "Prefab" the application lets users add features or otherwise change proprietary programs (although it doesn't actually reveal the source code).

Fogarty explains, "I'm using some program that I love, and I'm going to stick in some features from some other program that I love, so I have a more unified interface."

However, he also acknowledges that companies could launch legal challenges to the software.
