Apple Sells Contract-Free iPhones: $500-$700

For the first time, Apple will sell you an iPhone without an AT&T contract.

Wired: According to leaked internal documents, iPhone customers will no longer be required to purchase an AT&T contract in order to purchase the device. However, the phones are not unlocked, so customers will either have to unlock the phones themselves or use them with an existing AT&T contract.

The off-contract phones aren't exactly a bargain, though. The official policy reads: "Customers may purchase only one (1) iPhone at full price ($499 for the 8GB iPhone 3G, $599 for the 16GB iPhone 3GS, and $699 for the 32GB iPhone 3GS) per day."
