FCC Wants To Transition Broadcast TV Spectrum To Mobile Use

The new National Broadband Plans calls for freeing up to 500 MHz of spectrum over a ten-year period.

ChannelWeb: If Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski gets his way, up to 500 MHz of spectrum currently used to broadcast TV signals will be made available for mobile use over the next decade. While the spectrum is reserved for broadcasters, most of it is not currently being used, and it could be worth as much as $50 billion at auction.

"New technologies allow -- indeed, they require -- new strategic planning to ensure the most efficient use of spectrum, a vital public resource, especially given our broadband needs," Genachowski said.
