Court Order Helps Microsoft Tear Down Waledac Botnet

Legal move could knock out a botnet that sends up to 1.5 billion spam messages per day.

PCWorld: A U.S. federal judge has granted Microsoft a court order that shuts down 277 domains associated with the Waledac botnet. Thought to be used by Eastern European spammers, the botnet sends up to 1.5 million spam messages per day, many infected with various sorts of malware.

"This action has quickly and effectively cut off traffic to Waledac at the '.com' or domain registry level, severing the connection between the command and control centers of the botnet and most of its thousands of zombie computers around the world," Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

While observers agree that the move will cripple the botnet, at least temporarily, it is unlikely to shut down Waledac completely.
