Computers at 2,500 different organizations are infected with a variation of the Zeus botnet that harvests login and password information for financial systems, e-mail, and social networking sites.

ChannelWeb: Researchers at Internet security firm NetWitness have discovered that 75,000 systems at 2,500 businesses and government agencies have been infected with a computer virus known as the Kneber botnet. The malware harvests login credentials and "reports the information to miscreants who can use it to break into accounts, steal corporate and government information, and replicate personal, online and financial identities," said NetWitness.

The attacks have been ongoing for approximately 18 months and appear to originate in China and Europe. NetWitness has contacted targeted organizations with more information about the botnet.
