New add-ons to Gmail will allow users to post and view short messages--just like on Facebook and Twitter.

NY Times: In its latest attempt to compete with Twitter and Facebook, Google is making it easier for users to post and view status updates. Currently, users can post status updates through the Google chat service, but the company will be expanding those social networking features through its popular Gmail service.

“It might look like a minor feature advance, but this is another blow in the war against Facebook,” consultant Jeremiah Owyang told the NY Times.

It is not yet known whether Google will link the new Gmail feature to feeds from Twiiter, Facebook, and other social networking sites.
