Computerworld: According to a report published earlier this week, Microsoft may be discussing a new type of license for its Office software with channel partners. Called a "union" license, the new structure would charge enterprises the same fee whether they hosted the software on site or used it in the cloud, perhaps through Windows Azure.
Computerworld notes that the new license "help reduce complexity for large companies with workers with widely varying degrees of software usage. Heavy and regular users of a Microsoft app might require an on-premise server version, while light users can make do with a hosted version from Microsoft."
However, analysts warn that few enterprises may actually be interested in the new licensing arrangement.
