Microsoft's top lawyer has asked Congress to give data stored in the cloud the same protection as data stored on a PC.

Computerworld: Microsoft wants Congress to pass new laws giving data in the cloud the same protection as data on a PC. It also wants tougher penalties for hackers who attack data centers.

Microsoft's top lawyer, Brad Smith, said in a speech, "We need Congress to modernize the laws and adapt them to the cloud."

Microsoft and other cloud computing providers are also hoping for an international agreement that would extend protection for cloud data around the world.
