Cheap Windows PCs push Apple Into #5 Spot - Once Again, Price is King

According to both IDC and Gartner, PC sales were up dramatically Q4 of 09, thanks primarily to brisk sales of cheap Windows PCs.

ZDNet: Good news: both IDC and Gartner are reporting that PC sales skyrocketed in the 4th quarter of 2009. Analysts place credit for the increase on lower prices.

“The U.S. market exploded in the fourth quarter," said IDC analyst David Daoud. "The vendors responded with new low price points to stimulate demand and face competition.”

The bad news in the reports is for Apple, which fell to 5th place among computer makers, despite rising sales. The top four places were claimed by Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer and Toshiba.
